WiMAX will be primarily data driven (voice services reaching less than 10%) ... North America will be one of the largest markets for Mobile WiMAX voice services (32% of the total market).
Why use WiMAX for voice only? (no man, we are not speaking about VOIP). In North America, mobiles are working as bad as ... walky-talkies (networks are using CDMA rather than the GSM technology used in Europe. Wasn't smart). This explains that. Although most calls are free when using a same network (good point), mobile users (even in New York) are still learning how to send SMS. Wow, wake up America! Mobile phones can do much more than just talk.
Take advantage of GPRS for access on the move or free WiFi connectivity for broadband speeds when available. WAP over GPRS shouldn't cost more than USD 3 for at least 3 MB data transfer a month. [The Wall Street Journal] Nokia and Intel jointly develop WiMAX technology for mobile devices. If the two companies can get WiMAX into a wide range of portable devices, it would allow more companies to enter the wireless-communications market in competition with the major cellphone-service providers.
Consumers are not silly milk cows. Prices should drop drastically, or Telcos will die. Wireless is a tough battleground. Google & Fon free Wi-Fi initiative, VoIP, etc are welcome. It's only a start guys.
